Recent Grants
The Murphysboro District 186 Education Foundation approved and funded a grant submitted by Troy Griswold and Tracy Landewee, both teachers at Carruthers School. This grant allowed the teachers to purchase a telescope and digital camera. They formed an Astronomy Club which was open to all students of CUSD 186. This technology was used to capture time lapse photography of the solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. Recordings of the eclipse are available to watch on the district website. The equipment is available to planet and stargazers at Carruthers school during both day and evening hours.
The Foundation approved and funded a grant submitted by Meteicha Green and Michelle Carter, both third-grade teachers at Carruthers school. Their grant allowed them to build an Outdoor Exploration Station which houses a wireless weather station. They were also able to establish a butterfly pollinator garden and build a raised bed vegetable garden. The Outdoor Exploration Station allows students to launch investigations during outdoor resources. They are able to collect data on changes in weather conditions, record precipitation amounts and describe typical weather conditions. The students also study the diverse and unique life-cycles of many organisms.
