Scholarships
The Foundation is here to help with your desire to establish a new scholarship. We, along with our partner The Southern Illinois Community Foundation (SICF) http://www.sicf.org/, will guide and assist you in making your generosity a reality.
- Please complete the MHS General Scholarship Application This application will determine your eligibility for certain local scholarships. YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED IF YOU DO NOT APPLY. Please check with the counseling office if you have questions. *Update this as your finalize your plans, & you become aware of any scholarship you receive*
- Scholarships on this page are listed in order of due date. We update regularly, please continue to check for new scholarships.
- In addition to the scholarships listed below, we encourage you to check with your employer, parents' employers, your church & other community organizations.
- Links to national scholarship sites are on the bottom of the page.
- Apply for scholarships within the college/university you plan to attend. These are listed on the 'Scholarship' section and sometimes the 'Foundation' section of a university's website.
- As you become aware of any scholarship you've received, please inform your counselor. We want to make sure that you are invited and properly recognized at this year's Awards Night (Thursday, May 12th)

SIU Credit Union Scholarship is due March 31, 2016. Five $1000 will be awarded for the 2016-17 academic year; applicant must be a SIU Credit Union member in good standing & maintain that membership for the duration of the award. Applications available online.
Crosswalk Community Action Agency, due April 1, 2016 is awarding scholarships to Franklin, Williamson, Jefferson & Jackson county residents. Student must meet the list of requirements to be eligible. Applications available in counseling office.
Jackson County Farm Bureau Scholarship is due April 1st, 2016. The Foundation will offer the following: the Charles W. Young Scholarship in the amount of $500 given in
recognition of his years of service as Jackson Co. President. Additional scholarships in the amount of $250-$1500
will be given out depending on availability of funds and qualified applicants. To be eligible for consideration, an applicant MUST: Be a Jackson County Farm Bureau member or a member’s dependent; Be a high school senior or already attending a post-secondary school; Be enrolled full-time (12 hours) at a post-secondary school to study an agriculture-related field. Murphysboro Black Alumni Society Scholarship is due April 1, 2016. Any student enrolled as a senior at MHS, with proof of enrollment to an accredited college or university is welcome to apply. Applications are available in counseling office.
Zeta Phi Beta Arnolia Boone Education Award is due April 1, 2016. In keeping with the sorority’s unwavering commitment to post-secondary education, our scholarship program presents an annual academic award to a graduating, college bound high school senior. Eligible students are female, permanent residents of Jackson County, have at least a 2.5 GPA & have been admitted to a 4-year university. Applications available in counseling office.
Illinois Cryptic Masons Nurses Foundation Scholarship is due April 1, 2016. The Nurses Foundation Scholarship is awarded to full-time students pursuing a career in the field of nursing with plan to complete a program from an accredited school of Nursing or certification as a Registered Nurse. The applicant for a Nurses Foundation Scholarship must be a resident of the State of Illinois and must have and maintained a 'B' or a 3.0 grade point average in the accredited Nursing Program. State Representative Terri Bryant Community College Sponsorship Award is dueApril 6th, 2016. Scholarship recipients will be chosen based on merit, financial need and academic achievement. An impartial committee of educational and community leaders review all applications and independently select seven (7) $250 awards that will be applied to costs incurred by students at any of the following Illinois Community Colleges: Rend Lake College, John A. Logan College, Shawnee Community College, and Kaskaskia College. Applications available online & in the counseling office.
The Bank of Carbondale Community Scholarship is due April 4th, 2016. The Bank of Carbondale is pleased to award three $1,000 scholarships to 3 graduating seniors at MHS. We would like your office to handle distribution of the applications, and your scholarship committee to choose the recipients. The following criteria will be used by the selection committee in awarding these scholarships: academic achievement, financial need, extra-curricular activities and community service, work activities, & essay. Specific guidelines & application available online & in our office.
Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution Joseph S. Rumbaugh Oration Contest is due April 15th, 2016. The contest (open to 9-12 grade) is for an original oration not less than five minutes and not more than six (in English). Topics shall deal with an event, a document within the context of the Revolutionary War, or a personality showing the relationship it bears to American today. Application instructions are available online; Please read all of these instructions carefully and pay close attention to paragraph five, which states the specific rules for submission. Download and complete the appropriate forms.
Damas Latinas Spanish Essay Contest is due April 21, 2016. Eligible students have at least a 3.0 GPA, & took 3+ years of Spanish. Application information is available in the counseling office.
Kids' Chance Inc of Illinois Scholarship is due April 30, 2016. Illinois Kids’ Chance is the state chapter of a national organization that awards college scholarships to kids whose parents have either been killed or seriously injured in work-related accidents. Application & submission instructions available online.
Velma McKinnon Associate Degree Nursing Scholarship is due April 30, 2016. To be considered for the scholarship, you must be a graduate of Murphysboro High School seeking to pursue an Associate Degree in Nursing at John A Logan College.
