Nancy Mueller McNittAthlete: 1987-1991
Nancy began her athletic career at Christ Lutheran Grade School by participating in a number of sports including girls and boys basketball, track, volleyball, and various other sports. At MHS Nancy played volleyball two years and basketball and track all four years. She was a track MVP ‘89, ‘90, ‘91; basketball MVP ‘90, ‘91, and basketball all conference ‘90, ‘91. In track Nancy was often praised for participating in four events, the shot, discus, long jump, and a sprint, scoring many team points. She participated in TAC, the Prairie State games and the Meet of Champions all four years. Nancy’s freshman year she broke the school record and conference meet record for shot (40’ 2”) breaking that record her sophomore year (40’ 5 1/2”). Her senior year Nancy set a new discus record (117’ 3 1/2” ). |
Nancy captured conference championships in shot ‘88, ‘89, ‘90, in discus ‘90, ‘91, and long jump ‘89. She captured sectional championships in shot ‘88, ‘89, ‘91, and in discus ‘91. Qualifying for state all four years she placed 8th in shot ‘89 and 7th in discus ‘91. Nancy was also awarded the Illinois Coaches Association for Girls and Women’s Recognition Award, the Illinois Prep Top Times, ‘89 All-State track team, the Illinois Track and cross-country coach’s association All-State track and field team ‘89, and the ISHA Illinois All-State Track and Field team ‘91.
Nancy was a four year starter on the Varsity basketball team. She was a Harrisburg Lady Bulldog Invitational all tournament team member, ‘89 ‘90, a Carbondale Lady Terrier’s all tournament team member, ‘90, ‘91, a girls top ten scorer in Southern Illinois, ‘90, ‘91, The leading scorer on the Southern Illinois Lion’s All-Star team ‘91, Champaign All-State honorable mention ‘91, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association All-State team (AA) alternate ‘91, and a Southern Illinois Coaches Association All-South award winner. In 1991 Nancy set the single game scoring record of 40 pts against Eldorado. She finished her basketball career as the all time leading scorer with 1256 pts.
In addition to these accomplishments Nancy was awarded the SWE conference Student Athlete ‘89, the Claire Blanche Diers award ‘91, and the MHS Red Devils Senior of the year, ‘91. After receiving the top ten academic award in high school Nancy attended SEMO on a track scholarship. In 1992 she was awarded the SEMO scholar Athlete award. Nancy returned to Murphysboro to serve nine years as a basketball coach at various levels.
